On 22 June 1897 there were grand public celebrations to mark the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Victoria. The Queen was now the longest-reigning monarch in British history. The day was declared a bank holiday in Britain and Ireland as well as in India. A six-mile procession wound through the London streets. The day was made a festival of British Empire and the prime ministers of many Dominions were invited. Victoria was 78 years old and dressed in mourning. She stayed in her carriage for most of the day, but described the crowd’s cheers as “truly marvellous and deeply touching.” Discover Victoria at Kensington Palace. In the early morning of 20 June 1837, Victoria found out she was Queen. Just a few hours later, she met with her Privy Council in the Red Saloon at   #KensingtonPalace   and signed her first document as Queen, an Oath of Allegiance to the Church of Scotland. This document is now on loan to Kensington from   @nationalarchivesUK   for our exhibition, Victoria: A Royal Childhood. On this day in 1381, the Tower’s defences were breached for the first and only time by 400 rebels. The poor were deeply unhappy when a tax collector tried for the third time in four years to levy a poll tax to help pay for the unpopular war against France. This led to widespread protest and as many as 20,000 peasants marched to London. Richard II, his family and the Archbishop of Canterbury, fled to the Tower for safety. Some of the rebels followed and camped outside the Tower of London. As King Richard left the Tower to meet with the leaders, the rebels saw their opportunity and ran straight in before the gates could be closed. The rebels laid on the King’s bed, and even asked the King’s mother to kiss them. She managed to escape, but the Archbishop of Canterbury wasn’t so lucky, and was executed by the mob on Tower Hill. The leader of the revolt, Wat Tyler, also met a sticky end. As he came forward to talk to the King, he was killed by the Mayor of London. In a moment of sheer courage, the 14 year old King persuaded the peasants to accept him as their leader and to go home. Later, the other leaders of the mob were arrested and hanged. The rebellion frightened the wealthy and made them realise that they could not push the poor too far. No government collected a Poll Tax until 1990, over 600 years later. Over the following 50 years peasants were able to work for more money and slowly gained more freedoms to work where they pleased and choose who they wanted to marry.   #onthisday     #historyonthisday     #peasantsrevolt     #tax     #toweroflondon
